Though I have many aspirations for my time in this life the one thing that has remained the most constant in my life is martial arts. To this day I train for hours not only to strengthen and balance my body but, to increase focus in my mind and live a disciplined life. I'm not perfect by any means but, my training keeps me honest about who I am, where I am and how much further I have left to go. My training allows me to accept all things in my life positive and negative.
You hear all the time about how martial arts has all these "other" life benefits like confidence, fitness, self discipline, self respect, focus, work ethic, etc. But, where are these benefits? How do we go beyond the fight in martial arts?
For those who follow my Kali Center often see the tagline... Kali • Fitness • Lifestyle
Let me explain what this actually is and means.
Yes, Kali is the martial arts I practice but, what is Kali really? Is it fighting with weapons? Is it self defense? Is it the badass martial arts moves we see on the big screen movies performed by our favorite actors? Yes, yes and yes, however, Kali is something much more and I believe all martial arts are this...
Kali is a set of principles. Principles are a fundamental truth or proposition that serves as the foundation for a system of belief or behavior or for a chain of reasoning. It is a rule or belief governing one's personal behavior, morally correct behavior and attitudes. It is a general scientific theorom or law that has numerous special applications across a wide field. A natural law forming the basis for the construction or working of a machine. A principle is a fundamental source or basis of something.
Fitness is the conditioning of being physically fit and healthy. The quality of being suitable to fulfill a particular role or task. An organism's ability to survive and reproduce in a particular environment.
Lifestyle is the way in which a person or group lives.
When I put Kali, Fitness and Lifestyle together it means living a life guided by the principles learned in Kali. To always be improving my fitness physically, mentally and emotionally.
Why did I choose to become a martial arts teacher? Truthfully that is a two part answer.
First, I knew that teaching would hold me accountable to living by example. What is the example I always thrive to live by? To live an authentic and transparent life. To live honestly and in a manner that keeps be accepting who I am, thriving to improve and always grow in all aspects of life.
Secondly, to give. I think it's in our nature to want to share and help our kin. In my teaching style I give far more than I get. Life for me (which I learned from martial arts) is about solving problems. Sometimes you have to solve problems that are already in your cosmos and sometimes you solve problems before they have a chance to begin. In my life I have found learning from those educated and from mentors and teachers is the fastest way to accelerate in life and get the most value out of this venture. Mentors increase life's quality and if I can positively increase value and quality in peoples lives then I'm all for it.
I've met a lot of people and made a lot of marvelous friends through martial arts. Martial arts has helped my develop the courage to admit when I'm wrong and to seek proper solutions. I believe self defense is an essential skill just like walking, running and swimming but martial arts offers so much more. It offers a life of rich balance, creativity and opportunity.
