One of the most frequent questions I get asked is, what exactly is Kali Center's Kali?
Is it Pekiti-Tirsia, is it a blend of two or three different styles and if so which ones?
The answer is here...
The style of Kali we train, study and practice at Kali Center is simply called, "KALI." I'm not interested in getting too caught up in a name.
Over the last twenty years of training and research in different FMA styles, systems and instructors I've come to see and believe that KALI is an in depth expression of the secret universal laws and variables, mathematics and physics.
It is true that our curriculum holds a strong influence and foundation in the Pekiti Tirsia I've learned as that system holds the first layer or foundation of the Combat Geometry, however, as I've continued over the last handful of years to explore other blade fighting arts and cultures outside of FMA I've learned there are many more layers to the combat geometry that I was not taught in Pekiti Tirsia or other styles of Kali. That's not to say the other layers are not there, I just wasn't taught them by those instructors. (These advanced layers are not shown in our YouTube videos and are preserved for in person and Inner Triangle study only at this current time.)
In our KALI here at Kali Center we not only incorporate strategy, tactics, techniques and training methods from various FMA's but also from those of Spanish, Fencing, Ancient Greek tactics, mathematics, and ancient Romans, etc. We also include philosophy and expertise from the greatest thinkers and minds like Socrates, Aristotle, Seneca, Plato, Homer, Marcus Aurelius, Miyamoto Musashi, Alexander The Great, and others.
So if we hold such a blend of tactics, ideology and education why stay with the word KALI?
There are many meanings for the word Kali, some say it means, to scrape, that it's the root of Kalis (sword) and in other places Kali is a fishing technique but the meaning that stood out the most for me was, Kali means to dig.
I am constantly challenging KALI by digging deeper into the greater system and into myself for further exploration, discoveries and answers to my many many questions regarding the blade and life.
Kali was the introduction and root for me into the dark world of deep thinking. It is my greatest influence in life and therefore I've kept the word close to me.
For me, each letter in KALI stands for something, hence why all four letters are capitalized...
Knowledge is first as knowledge leads to the path of truth.
Authenticity is second, Like Aristotle said, "Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom." This is the path led by truth.
Leadership is third, it takes a great amount of courage and self certainty to be a strong and great leader.
and forth is Immersion, a complete devotion to a path, process and/or system of principles and to study deeply.
This is my personal study of KALI. To not be locked by any one man's or style's ideology but to continue to freely study and practice in the exploration of truth.
This in brief is what is Kali Center's KALI.
