How to get good at Kali faster... the big secret!

I get asked so much, "How can I get really good at Kali (or any martial arts) faster?" or the classic, "How long will it take me to get really good at Kali?"

Let's shine some light and wisdom on these types of questions.

First, If you're thinking about how fast you can be accomplished in Kali you're already looking for the end so the real answer is you won't get as good as you wish you will. It's this simple.

I've been training Kali for 17 years this summer and that is nothing compared to the greats who were fortunate with time to start before me but no matter when you start the journey isn't about the end. If you're thinking about the end of the journey before you even got started or past the introduction period (1 year is the introduction period), then you're already at the end of your rope.

When it comes to building skills it's about putting in the hours, not necessarily the years. I've known too many martial artists who say they have 20 plus years of training but they really don't. They have more like 2 or 3 years of training over the course of 20 plus years.

There are 8,765.82 hours in 1 year. That's 168.57 hours per week so if you're putting in 2 hours of training time per week thats 104 hours f training per year. That's 84 years of training 2 hours per week to equal 1 year of training.

Now of course we're not going to be training for 24 hours a day for 365 days out of the year but it's a great measuring tool to use to see how much you're actually training. We know that the more flight hours you put in with solid focus and study you'll get your pilot license at a faster rate but notice that I mentioned the solid focus and study. Getting good faster at Kali is not just about the hours, it's about the quality of that time spent.
So since majority of us may only get between 2-12 hours of training per week out of each weeks 168 hours you need to really be enjoying what you're doing and learning. The secret element I have found in increasing your skills faster is FUN!

You need to be having fun in your training and enjoying the process of each day. What Fun does in training is breaks the focus your mind might have on time and keeps you fully engaged in learning and experiencing drills, lessons, sparring, etc. So Fun is the biggest secret.

Safety and injury prevention is the second in line. Keep training safe so that you can continue putting in those fun hours each day. You'll start to notice an increase in skills in a couple weeks at first, then again in a few months and over the course of years.

So to speed up the average time it takes to develop intermediate skills in Kali (roughly 18 months) just focus on having fun, learning and experiencing each day and you'll get there faster.

Remember, a watched pot never comes to a boil fast enough!
