I want to take a moment to publicly recognize Tom Zachwieja’s 7 years of dedication as my student in the martial arts. He has been through a serious journey and I’m confident in saying that the journey will continue.
Tom is the example of the perfect student. He has the most hours spent in training with me in classes, privately and training camps. Tom has traveled and explored the world of Kali and other martial arts along side me now for 7 years. His commitment, dedication, effort and persistence needs to be recognized.
Tom first came to me through a mutual friend (and past student of mine) in January 2009 with the desire to learn martial arts and self defense. Since then Tom has been through some of the most intense and tough training physically, mentally and emotionally behind the camera and I’m happy to have witnessed his transformation from a teenager into a real man who stands by his principles, ethics and truth.
It has not always been easy for Tom and the road ahead will still throw it’s obstacle in his path. In fact I will make sure of it as his teacher and as his friend. In 7 years, Tom has never had an excuse not to train. He has trained with multiple broken bones, injuries from life and in countless severe and threatening conditions. He has never complained and only performed. For 7 years, I’ve pushed Tom to his limits physically, mentally and emotionally and he always pushes himself through the storms (as he says, There is No Option, you're either going to do it or you're not.)
Over the last 7 years as I challenge Tom he has also returned the favor and challenged me. Tom’s persistence and demand pushes me to grow as a practitioner and teacher. I always enjoy our stand up and brutally honest conversations. Without Tom I would not be the teacher, practitioner and person I am today.
I am truly blessed to have such a man on my team and I say to all my students, past, present and future, take notes… Tom is the example to follow!
Thank you Tom for the amazing 7 years and I look forward to many more.
